Animal Care Assistant F/T (35hrs), Based in Earlston

Following the expansion of our kennel facilities, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Animal Care Assistant, with a commitment to animal welfare, to join us as at our Rescue Centre at Earlston in the Scottish Borders.

We are looking for someone who shares our values of kindness and compassion to all animals; and respect and concern for the individual needs of all animals coming into and leaving our care. We are seeking a confident communicator with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and plenty of initiative to work alongside our existing animal care team.

Essential Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • SVQ or equivalent Level 2 in Small Animal Care
  • Practical experience of working with animals with good observation skills of physical and behavioural changes.
  • Able to work as a member of a Team.
  • Experience of working with the general public and understanding of customer care.
  • Able to work with dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs and exotics.
  • Able to prioritise workload and work alone under minimal supervision from a distance.
  • Able to respond appropriately when members of public are faced with or present difficult conversations.
  • Clear communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to make and maintain clear written and numerical records.
  • IT skills (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook Email).
  • Familiar and competent with social media
  • Flexible in respect of working hours and responsibilities
  • A commitment to and understanding of the benefits of animal welfare education
  • A full clean driving licence.

 Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of domestic animal care and husbandry from working in the animal care/welfare industry
  • Willingness to develop dog management skills
  • Able to deal with difficult animals
  • Able to foster animals where possible.

Charity Shop Assistant Manager (p/t) 18hrs, Based in Kelso

Our four charity shops, in Kelso, Galashiels, Duns, and Hawick play a key part in helping to fund the day-to-day operating costs of the Rescue Centre at Earlston. They provide a focal point for the communities they serve, helping to promote the charity and our vital work.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Charity Shop Assistant Manager to join our shop team based in Kelso on a part-time basis working 18 hours per week to support the Shop Manager and team of Sales Assistants and Volunteers.
As a Charity Shop Assistant Shop Manager, you will be an integral part of the team to maximise the shop sales and manage and motivate the team.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Experience in a retail or customer service environment, with supervisory/ managerial experience of staff and/or volunteers
  • Able to organise and present goods for sale with attention to
  • Able to see potential and motivate others, with a work together towards a shared goal
  • Clear communication skills and an inclusive approach to diverse team and all members of the
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to nurture skills in team members to ensure a welcoming atmosphere and connection with the community.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong external
  • Numeracy and cash handling experience to deal accurately with sales transactions and ensure that all charity administration and financial procedures are followed including (after training and in absence of manager) banking, cash register reconciliation, weekly returns.
  • Written skills to maintain
  • IT skills for till operation, credit cards, MS 365 (word, excel, outlook, MS Teams), SharePoint and social media.
  • Organisational skills with the ability to plan and prioritise workload and best use of time for yourself and the shop team.
  • Able to lift and carry boxes/bags of donations safely and to stand/bend/stretch in order to prepare and display donations.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Full UK car driving licence
  • Experience of working with volunteers or vulnerable people
  • Experience of fundraising

Charity Shop Sales Assistant (P/T) 24hrs, Based in Galashiels

Our Borders Pet Rescue Galashiels Shop is an important part of the local community selling clothes, CD’s, DVD’s, furniture, books, pictures, electrical goods, and many other items to support its business. Working alongside the Manager, Assistant Manager and volunteers, the Charity Sales Assistant is vital to ensuring the success of the shop by providing customers with a positive experience, keeping stock levels replenished throughout the day to support the continual generation of sales. With a focus on delivering an excellent customer service and maximising sales and revenues you will have good numeracy, verbal, and written communication skills.  A physically demanding role, but in return it is a satisfying and rewarding opportunity to improve the lives of animals in need.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Experience of working with other people to achieve a shared goal.
  • Honesty and Integrity in all aspects of the role including handling cash and valuable donations of stock.
  • An interest in presenting goods attractively with attention to detail regarding visibility, categories, and pricing.
  • An organised approach which can be used to categorise donations.
  • A passion for giving pre-loved items a new use, and able to ensure that items are of a good quality for sale. Washing and cleaning as appropriate.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence to welcome and advise customers, and to recognise when to give a customer the space to browse.
  • Written and numerical skills to maintain records e.g., stock records, process cash payments.
  • IT skills including use of internet for online sales and experience of using Microsoft Office products.
  • Able to carry out manual handling duties.

Desirable skills

  • Experience in shop/retail activities and achieving sales targets.
  • Experience of window dressing and/or product displays.
  • Experience of working with volunteers and/or vulnerable people.
  • Experience of successfully achieving sales in a retail environment.
